Does the peplum trend look classic to you? It was actually introduced
in the 19th century. A
peplum or a peplos is a kind of short overskirt usually attached to a
fitted jacket, blouse or dress.Peplum can be sewn on tops,
dresses, skirts, or pants to create the illusion of curvy hips and a
full waist. Originating from Greece many centuries
ago, this fashion trend has made a flash-forward into the present era,
and how! This trend was hot in the 40s a 80s, and now its made a
comeback on the designer runways for Spring and Fall. Peplum is a
fabulous embellishment that will add flair to your outfit, and doesn’t
need a lot (if any) accessorizing. Will it be an addition to your
closet?
Tracks the trend of the waist ruffle and tells you why you should try it — ASAP!
On first look, it might seem like a severe and intimidating
trend, also theatrical at times, but young designer Priyanka Khanna
insists Indian women should embrace the trend. “a well-constructed
peplum flatters voluptuous women (think Beyonce, Kim Kardashian and even
Oprah Winfrey). It’s not true that this silhouette is only for twiggy
thins. ” She lists some reasons why:
1.Indian
women have the gift of curves and the peplum celebrates the
waist-to-hip area. Women who are proud of their narrow waist but are
conscious of their lower stomach bulge can seek solace in a peplum. It
covers those flaws. On the other hand, a peplum also helps accentuate
curves on a ‘straight boyish’ figure. It’s versatile.
2.
The waist ruffle on a peplum skirt is something that creates proportion
in a body. When styled with a slim-fit shirt or even a simple camisole,
the look makes you stand out in a crowd. However, keep in mind that
there are different types of peplum skirts that are suited to different
body types. Remember, it is all about dressing according to one’s body
structure.
3.
Whether you are tall, average or short and sweet, the peplum works.
Short peplum dresses give an appearance of longer legs. Peplum pencil
skirts that reach the knee or the narrow part of your legs can be worn
by tall or average-height women. Not all of us are gifted with 37-inch
catwalk legs, hence no boots of any kind (booties or thigh-highs) should
be worn with peplums. Opt for some fun pumps or peep-toes.
4.
If you are not used to peplums, the easiest way to incorporate the
trend into your wardrobe is to start with a peplum jacket or top. It
gives your outfit a sudden oomph and geometric character. The peplum on a
jacket or top is advisable for women with heavier hips (it has to be
placed strategically). This can be teamed with trousers, jeans or fitted
skirts. Note: The peplum is an elegant ‘waist ruffle’, hence should not
be worn with loose, flowing maxi skirts or baggy jeans!
